What a Single Woman Can Learn From the 40 Days of Dating Experiment

Over in New York, two close friends had decided to stage an experiment, dating for 40 consecutive days, and writing about the experience. Eighteen months later, and the pair are back, with a book about their experiment, and the aftermath. Now, I have to admit, two summers ago, I tried to get into 40 Days. I remember reading the first couple of days of the experiment, but struggling to get into it. I attributed it to dating overkill. I was knee-deep in my own dating experiment.

By Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh. One day in December of , frustrated and disappointed with our love lives, we came up with the idea for an experiment. We had been good friends and peers in the graphic design world for years, and we were constantly surprised by how consistent our opposite relationship problems were. Based on the adage that it takes forty days to change a bad habit, we decided that dating each other for forty days, even though our relationship had always been platonic, would force us to explore our issues and maybe even break our own bad love habits.

We thought that if we could carry this out with as much sincerity as possible, then maybe we could not only help ourselves, but potentially create a larger dialogue to help the many others out there, who, like us, are looking for love. We did not make the decision to create the 40 Days of Dating blog until after our experiment. In the blog, we shared what we each had recorded in our journals while we were dating, which most sane people would never reveal to the world.

Well, neither of us was prepared for the fact that the project would go viral, or that we would be featured in major news media all over the world. While this book contains the entire blog, it is so much more than that. We reveal, for the first time, everything that went on between us after the experiment, and after we launched the blog. This project has become a real labor of love for us, and we hope you get as much out of it as we have.

It has been an incredible trip, as you will see, even the difficult, awkward, and weird parts. While some dismissed the blog as a side-effect of the too-much-information generation, many more have been loyal followers of our journey—hating to love it, loving to hate it, or just simply loving it. You be the judge—and we hope you enjoy!

The whole thing was documented on their elaborately designed website. It finished today with the capstone Day 40 post. Their friends wanted to make a trendy website, replete with sooo many cool fonts, and they obliged by closed-mouth kissing each other for over a month. Is it real if they do the experiment just as friends? There was no way this was ever going to be a reasonable facsimile of a dating scenario. From the beginning, their relationship was designed to be observed, meaning everything they did, they did knowing that someday someone was going to read about it.

Performance art? I have to see him for another 24 days, so my mind just wanders in circles. In the final post, Tim notes that he thinks Jessie wanted a happy story all along. Book Review – 40 Days of Dating by Timothy Goodman & Jessica Walsh

Friends Jessica and Timothy decided to date for 40 days and write about the experience. The result is 40 Days of Dating , an absurdly captivating blog. It’s easy to fall in love with 40 Days of Dating : a lot easier, as it turns out, than Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman are finding it to fall in love with each other. But hey, it might happen. The thrill of the blog — which documents their day experiment — is the uncertainty of it all. The pair began as friends and decided to try dating for 40 days with a few guidelines: a requirement to see one another every day, a weekly couples therapy appointment, three date nights a week, one weekend trip together, and no seeing anyone else.

The friends-turned-lovers released the final installment of their blog on Friday, revealing that they chose to go their separate ways , but remain friends, when the 40 days came to a close on April Walsh and Goodman found themselves falling for each other, going to couples therapy, taking a vacation, fighting, making up and ultimately breaking up during the course of the 40 days.

Still, readers were left wondering whether the end was really the end, especially after Goodman revealed in his very last paragraph that he was in love with Walsh. Metro: What was it like to see this project come to a close online? Was it bittersweet to have that last entry go live? Jessica Walsh: I have mixed feelings about it. The project happened over four months ago, and as we posted the daily entries day by day, it felt in some strange way that I had to relive that chapter of my life again with the public weighing in.

It felt a little surreal. While I am so glad that the project reached so many people and seemed to touch so many people, it is also nice to close that chapter and focus on the present. Timothy Goodman: It was difficult, yet cathartic, to relive the whole experience for the second time — particularly with an audience watching.

40 Days of Dating Taught Us a Little About Love, and a Lot About Design

Did anything interesting happen? Truthfully, I am quite nervous. However, I know that when an opportunity scares me, I must go for it. No matter what the outcome, it will certainly be an interesting experience.

With these rules in place, the two launched their design-heavy blog, “40 Days of Dating,” in , hoping to “cure” one another of their dating.

Their solution to the question? Date each other for forty days. Both Jessica and Timothy have self-professed relationship issues—him with commitment issues and her with over-commitment issues—and both have found themselves single. The plan is to jump into a full-scale committed relationship, go to couples therapy, and complete a survey at the end of each of the forty days.

To me, however, it seemed like 40 Days of Dating was less like an experiment and more like a train wreck where nobody could look away. But everyone learns from mistakes—even when they seem to be made intentionally. So to say that I learned nothing from 40 Days of Dating would be a lie. Here’s what I took away from the ordeal, despite itself.

My solutions have sometimes been errant and often unproductive, but—thanks to 40 Days of Dating —I now know never to opt to launch into a full-scale committed relationship with the most readily available man I can snag. Because that would be desperate. This word is often misapplied to women who are actively searching for Mr. But desperation really means to be in a state of despair.

Merely one month after signing with evil agency overlords CAA, the duo that made you hate love have sold the movie rights to their 40 Days of Dating blog to Warner Brothers. Curse me all you want for approaching this development deal with a bitterness only rivaled by Goodman’s disdain for Walsh’s feelings over the course of the 40 day experiment, but when you take a multi-week break from putting up posts on the site you’re trying to sell simply because you’re too busy trying to sell it, it’s hard to believe that your sale isn’t just a complete sell-out.
